Admissions Requirements - This is a limited access program. Continuing enrollment approval will be required to enroll in the program specific courses based on a selection process after completing the General Education classes required.
- Students must have a standard high school diploma (or GED) and be at least 18 years of age to apply.

Admission Process The application period is January 1-31, to begin classes in the summer semester.
Applicants are admitted to the Diagnostic Medical Sonography program using a selective admission process and point ranking system. NOTE: the application will be available ONLY during the application period above. Failure to complete all requirements will dismiss the applicant from the selection process.
The Diagnostic Medical Sonography program is held on the Deltona campus. Students are expected to be available for classes and clinicals Monday through Friday while in the program.
A selection committee utilizes a point system as a GUIDE in the selection of qualified students for the Sonography program which includes an overview of the applicant's overall college GPA, prerequisite GPA, and an overview of application supporting documentation materials (listed below), and any related health care or military experience. All applicants are encouraged to attach their supporting documentation for consideration with their application.
The point system for the Diagnostic Medical Sonography program selection criteria is as follows: Pre- and Co-Requisite courses point accruals are as follows: Letter Grade A B+ B C+ C 4.0 Scale 4 Points 3.5 Points 3.0 Points 2.5 Points 2.0 Points.

Applicants are given priority of interview selection based on total points, and supporting documentation. If applicants have multiple supporting documents to support their application, it is suggested to include all applicable documents in their application. Selected applicants will be invited to interview as part of the admissions process for the sonography program.
Daytona State College reserves the right to make changes in the admission criteria as circumstances require. Every reasonable effort will be made to communicate changes in the program to potential students.

Applicants can follow the below steps:
Phase One:
1. Complete the School of Health Careers Application (remember to include any supporting documentation). *The applicant is responsible for providing all supportive documentation prior to the deadline of January 31st .
2. All applicants must apply for and be accepted as a student at Daytona State College who meet the minimum requirement that includes a grade of “C” or better on completed program required courses, and a 2.5 cumulative GPA.
3. All applicants must successfully pass the TEAS test with a 65% or higher to be eligible to apply for admission into the sonography program. Completion of the Test of Essential Academic Skills (ATI TEAS) at Daytona State College, ATI TEAS results must meet the minimum requirements of an adjusted individual total score (AITS) at the 65th percentile or better. Beginning July 1, 2025, students will be required to take the TEAS Exam at the DSC Assessment Center. The exam will be available at any of our campus locations. This decision has been made to ensure the highest standards of exam integrity and fairness for all students. Please note that students who have previously taken and passed the TEAS Exam will be allowed to submit their scores for consideration, provided the scores are still valid. Test scores are valid for three years from the date of testing.
4. All applicants must have completed all Diagnostic Medical Sonography Program Prerequisite courses:
- SON1000 Introduction to Medical Sonography
- BSC1086C Human Anatomy & Physiology II with Lab
- MAC1105 College Algebra
- ENC1101 Introduction to Composition
- PHY1020 Conceptual Physics
All applicants are suggested to have completed all general education requirements before applying and submitting transcripts
General education requirements include:
- BSC1086C Human Anatomy & Physiology II with Lab
- POS2041 OR AMH2020 (American Federal Government or United States History Humanities/Art/Literature: One Course beginning with AMI, HUM, LIT, MUI, PHI, REL, or THE)
5. Applicants are encouraged to attend one online informative session for the Diagnostic Medical Sonography program. Informatory sessions are held through Microsoft teams.

Once the application window has closed (January 31), applicants will be notified of their status by email of an interview request to move forward with their application, or a decline approximately 4-6 weeks after the application deadline by regular mail. Interviewed applicants who have been conditionally accepted will receive an acceptance package with detailed instructions on how to proceed with required orientation items. Applicants that are not accepted may reapply for admission the following year.

Students selected for admission are accepted provisionally pending verification of a negative drug test and completion of a level II background check.
The program director will provide information about these additional admission requirements with the letter of acceptance and first day orientation information, along with the costs associated with the requirements.

Specialty-Specific Goals and SLOs
1. Abdomen/General Sonography
Goal: Prepare graduates to perform comprehensive abdominal and small-parts sonographic examinations, integrating anatomy, pathology recognition, image optimization, and professional practice.
SLOs:
- Cognitive: Identify normal and abnormal abdominal and small-parts anatomy and physiology, including liver, gallbladder, pancreas, spleen, kidneys, and bladder.
- Psychomotor: Perform complete abdominal and small-parts protocols with appropriate transducer selection, scanning technique, and image optimization.
- Affective: Demonstrate professional behavior, patient-centered care, and ethical practice while
performing abdominal examinations.
2. Obstetric & Gynecology (OB/GYN) Sonography
Goal: Prepare graduates to perform obstetric and gynecologic sonographic examinations across all trimesters and reproductive health settings, supporting maternal-fetal and women’s health.
SLOs:
Cognitive: Recognize normal and abnormal fetal and pelvic anatomy, including identification of common complications and pathologies.
Psychomotor: Perform obstetric and gynecologic exams using transabdominal and transvaginal techniques, optimizing imaging for diagnostic accuracy.
Affective: Communicate sensitively with patients, uphold ethical standards, and collaborate professionally with healthcare teams.
3. Vascular Sonography
Goal: Prepare graduates to perform non-invasive vascular sonography of arterial, venous, and cerebrovascular systems, integrating Doppler and hemodynamic principles to support accurate diagnosis.
SLOs:
- Cognitive: Identify normal and abnormal vascular anatomy, flow characteristics, and pathology, including stenosis, occlusion, thrombus, and aneurysm.
- Psychomotor: Conduct vascular examinations, apply Doppler techniques, obtain and document diagnostic waveforms, and perform physiologic measurements where applicable.
- Affective: Demonstrate professionalism, patient-centered care, and ethical communication during vascular evaluations.
4. Breast Sonography
Goal: Prepare graduates to perform high-quality breast sonography for diagnostic, screening, and interventional purposes, supporting early detection and comprehensive breast care.
SLOs:
Cognitive: Recognize normal breast anatomy and benign vs. malignant pathologies; understand BI-RADS descriptors and reporting standards.
Psychomotor: Perform targeted and whole-breast sonographic examinations; assist with ultrasound-guided procedures within scope.
Affective: Provide sensitive, professional, and ethical patient care while maintaining privacy and dignity.

Program Outcomes & Accreditation The Diagnostic Medical Sonography Program is nationally recognized by The American Registry of Radiologic Technologists for credentialing in general, obstetric, and vascular sonography.
