Daytona State Surgical Tech program head named a national FellowDAYTONA BEACH, Fla. (June 25, 2013) – Daytona State College Surgical Technology program head Dana Bancer has earned a prestigious recognition on a national level.

Bancer was named a Fellow of the Association of Surgical Technologists (FAST) at their national meeting held this spring in New Orleans. She is one of only 10 awardees chosen in 2013 – and one of only 73 individuals ever to be selected – out of the 36,000 surgical technologists across the United States.

An associate professor and program manager for Surgical Technology (ST), Bancer joined Daytona State in 2006. Under her direction, the ST vocational certificate program prepares students to work in operating rooms at local hospitals in Volusia and Flagler Counties. The National Certification exam passing rate of Daytona State ST students is 15 percentage points higher than the national average.   Active within the community and her profession, Bancer chairs the Exam Review Committee for the National Board of Surgical Technology and Surgical Assisting. Along with her program duties, she serves on numerous college-wide committees, including as co-chair for the Academic Success Committee for Vocational Programs and on the Scholarship Committee.

The FAST award is one of AST’s highest honors designed to provide recognition to those members who have significantly contributed to the profession as practitioners, educators, researchers, and administrators. Recipients are recognized as having upheld the highest standards and traditions of the surgical technology profession, including their devotion to the advancement of the practice of surgical technology through volunteer professional and community activities.
