New Sonography Program

New Diagnostic Medical
Sonography Program

Diagnostic Medical Sonographers are highly trained individuals that specialize in  creating images of the body’s soft tissues and organs using high energy sound waves.

These ultrasound or sonogram images are usually one of the first diagnostic tests performed when diagnosing or monitoring health concerns of patients. Most Sonographers work in healthcare settings like a physician’s office or a hospital.

The program will be offered at the Deltona Campus beginning Summer 2024. Our inaugural first cohort for this program has been identified and selected and will begin classes this summer term- the application window for our next class will open in January 2025.

Daytona State launches fundraising campaign for second residence hall

DSC's second residence hall renderingOur capital campaign to build a second student residence hall on the Daytona Beach Campus is underway and you are invited to help our students!

The new facility, which is expected to house approximately 200- or 256 students, could open as early as Fall 2026.

Our first residence hall has been a resounding success. It opened to full capacity in Fall 2022. It is already at full capacity for the upcoming academic year. And we have received more than 1,000 student housing applications in less than one year.

When we began studying the possibility of building housing on campus in 2018, a study we commissioned showed the college could support more than 500 students. Initial plans for the second residence hall call for approximately 52,000 square feet of space and approximately 200- or 256 beds.

We know that students who live on campus are more engaged with their instructors, utilize academic support systems more frequently, and participate more in on-campus activities.

With the DSC Foundation, we’re launching a $15 million capital campaign. Donations from the community will ensure our residence hall will be an affordable and accessible option for students. We need your support. Make your gift here, or contact the Daytona State College Foundation at Foundation@DaytonaState.edu or by calling (386) 506-3195.

You can learn more at the new residence hall web page and keep tabs on the campaign’s progress.

Recognizing Dr. Jessica Kester

Jessica joined us in Fall 2007 as a professor of English in the School of Communication. She is a writing enthusiast, poet and scholar who shares her passion for writing with her students, colleagues, and the community—both locally and nationally through her conference presentations and publications.

Dr. Kester earned her B.A. in English Language and Literature from the University of the Incarnate Word, an M.A. in Composition and Creative Writing from DePaul University, and her Ph.D. in Texts and Technology with a concentration in Writing and Rhetoric from UCF.

At DSC, Dr. Kester co-created and facilitated DSC’s Writing Across the Curriculum/Writing in the Discipline (WAC/WID) program from 2013 until 2020, helping faculty across disciplines integrate writing into their courses. She also serves as Poetry Editor for the Journal of Florida Studies, co-chairs the Composition Reading Group, is a member of the IRB, Department Assessment Committee, Sunshine Committee, Mentor Model Committee, served as Vice President of Faculty Senate and has served on the Planning Council and Tenure and Promotion Committee.

Jessica is a kind and patient mentor and if there is an important department initiative, she is always there to help. When she’s not in the classroom, you may see her walking briskly around campus for exercise or sharing pickled jalapeños from her garden with her friends at work.

Please join us in congratulating Jessica for her outstanding service and commitment to our mission.
