This course is part of the Criminal Justice Standards and Training Commission Specialized Training Program pursuant to Rule 11B-35.007, F.A.C. Courses in the Specialized Training Program are designed for post-basic or in-service training to enhance an officer’s knowledge, skills, and abilities in a specific area and may be credited toward an officer’s mandatory retraining, pursuant to Rule 11B-27.00212, F.A.C.

COURSE: This course is designed to provide an overview of mental health and substance abuse crises, with an emphasis on verbal de-escalation and effective response strategies. In response to the unanimous passage of the bipartisan Police Reform Bill (HB 7051), this course enhances an officers’ ability to recognize and respond to individuals experiencing mental illness, substance use disorders, or crisis situations.

Injury & Death Investigations CJSTC Course # 036 - 40 Hours
DATE: Monday, April 27 – Friday, May 1, 2026 - 8 a.m. – 5 p.m.
LOCATION: DSC Advanced Technology College
Salary Incentive or Mandatory Retraining
COURSE: This course is designed to provide the patrol officer and investigator with limited experience in death and related injury investigations, and a general insight into investigative, legal, and evidentiary considerations of this kind of investigation.
TOPICS TO BE COVERED INCLUDE: Initial scene investigation, Evidence documentation, handling, collection, and preservation, Wound identification recognition, Medico-legal recognition, Laboratory evidence analysis, and Crimes-specific investigations.
NOTE: Students should have successfully completed the basic recruit training program or have been exempted prior to taking this course. Students must attend all sessions of the course. Students are required to pass an end-of-course examination with a minimum of 80%.

Contraband Forfeiture CJSTC Course #1196 - 16 Hours

COURSE: This specialized course provides training on the statutory, constitutional, judicial, and practical requirements governing forfeiture under the Florida Contraband Forfeiture Act, emphasizing the judicious and lawful application of forfeiture authority. Participants will receive instruction on sections 932.701–932.7062, Florida Statutes, and the long-standing guidelines developed by the Florida Department of Law Enforcement, the Florida Sheriffs Association, and the Florida Police Chiefs Association.
NOTE: Students must attend all sessions of the course.

COURSE: Participants will engage in hands-on learning using real-world scenarios, case studies, and role-play exercises to apply key concepts in practical settings. Instruction is supported by Florida statutes, applicable case law, federal law, and self-assessment tools such as leadership style surveys and personality inventories.
The course also emphasizes the importance of officer wellness and its impact on performance and community safety.
NOTE: Students must attend all sessions of the course. Daily attire must be business casual, professional dress, or the approved agency uniform only.
